Sometimes elecrocardiogram abnormalities can be seen only during exercise. In these cases we may need to perform ECG during physical activity (e.g. cycling, treadmill use). This examination is called stress ECG (or treadmill test).

Stress ECG test is done with steadily increasing physical loading, either by exercise on a bicycle or a treadmill, which gives a gradual stimulation to the heart. During the test, ECG signals and blood pressure are recorded. We can study the patient’s capacity for bearing physical load and determine heart rhythm, heart capacity and the efficiency of the medical therapy we use. Stress ECG test allows us to detect hidden heart diseases as well.

The examination does not require any particular preparation from the patient, however, your doctor may advise you to stop taking certain medications before the exam. It is worth wearing or bringing comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for exercise. Eating heavy meals before the test is not recommended as cycling or running can be uncomfortable with a full stomach. In case of any discomfort experienced during the test, the doctor needs to be informed immediately so that he could decide whether to stop or continue the test. ECG test normally stops when the patient gets tired following the achievement of the target heart rate and target speed. Following the test, the patient is observed for a while.
