Endocrinology is a scientific field closely connected to internal medicine as it deals with endocrine system and its diseases such as thyroid, supplementary thyroid, pituitary, pancreas and adrenal gland.

Hormones that carry out regulation of different and important hormones in our body are produced by the endocrine system; consequently diseases affecting these hormones can be of various nature. These diseases can be traced back to the overproduction or absence of these hormones; thus the occurrence of cancer is common. Examination of diseases of endocrine nature is based on expensive special laboratory tests and quite often is dependant on imaging tests (CAT Scan, MRI and Radionuclide -Isotope- Scan). Fortunately, nowadays diagnostics of the most common thyroid diseases is within reach. With the help of routine laboratory tests and ultrasound test symptoms can be detected that are of non-functional disorder nature as well as thyroid nodules. Enlarged nodules in a normal thyroid gland or in an enlarged thyroid nodule, or in other words nodular struma has to be further tested, with a method that is safe – namely fine-needle aspiration cytology. Sampling is done by ultrasound guided biopsy, completely pain free, during which the sample cells uncover possible thyroid inflammation, cyst or thyroid cancer.

During routine endocrine screening the endocrinologist records disease history and consults the patient about complaints. For a precise diagnose laboratory tests are needed that include personalized hormonal test and blood sugar test. Further tests might be necessary (e.g. ultrasound test) on which specialized endocrinologist makes the decision. In most of the cases endocrine diseases are of long-term nature, in some cases life-long, consequently the endocrinologist monitors the patient’s condition and controls the applied treatment.
