The examination of the circulatory organs comprises two parts: ultrasound vascular imaging and cardiac ultrasound.

The state of our circulatory system and veins is very revealing about our body as a whole: vascular disease often points to the existence of other diseases in the body.

Vascular imaging is a non-invasive, pain-free method with no side effects. It provides information about the venous system and the arterial system of the human body. It allows the diagnosis of problems with the walls of blood vessels such as thickening and stiffening, calcification and blood vessel blockage. Using this method, we can estimate circulatory risk and check the state of complex blood flow patterns.

Circulatory examination involves ultrasound imaging of the jugular veins as well as the arterial and venous circulation of the upper and lower limbs, screening for vasoconstriction (the narrowing of blood vessels) and following the development of existing irregularities.

Duplex ultrasound is used to study the properties and irregularities of the veins and to assess their movement and change of position. Unlike ‘regular’ ultrasound imaging, it also allows for assessment of the properties of liquid flow. With this method it is possible to check venous and arterial blood circulation as well as blood flow, including its speed. Duplex ultrasound allows for the detection of serious conditions such as the narrowing or blockage of veins, which are significant risk factors of coronary heart disease.  

Carotid artery duplex scan is a test to examine the blood flow and capacitance of the carotid arteries, which bring blood from the heart to the brain. This test allows us to identify if there any deposits, narrowings, blockages or calcifications in the blood vessels and to evaluate potential risks to the blood supply to the brain. Color Doppler examination produces a color-coded image of the velocity of blood flow.

Doppler ultrasonography is used to test the condition of the veins and to study blood circulation. With this method we can (dis)confirm the existence of varicose veins, vasoconstriction and deep vein thrombosis.
